There’s no harm in making sure we know what to do in case of an earthquake. This morning, Headstart with Karen Davila on ANC featured earthquake preparedness in the Philippines. Her "expert" guess said that the Marikina to Tagaytay fault line is "due" to shift. EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON 'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE' My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake. I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters. The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene -- unnecessary. Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is what I call the 'triangle of life'. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building. TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY 1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed. 2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it. 3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs. 4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake. 5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair. 6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed! 7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged. 8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked. 9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them. 10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper. Spread the word and save someone's life... The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared! 'We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly' In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul , University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did 'duck and cover,' and ten mannequins I used in my 'triangle of life' survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover. There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the 'triangle of life.'  The United Nations is advising the Philippines to be ready for an upcoming big earthquake. A quake with a magnitude of 7.2 or higher on the Richter scale is sure to hit Metro Manila, they say, but the bigger question is when exactly this will happen.

The Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) report published in 2004 predicts that an earthquake with a high magnitude will surely occur because of the Philippine Fault Zone (also called the Marikina Valley Fault System), but experts can't predict when this disaster may happen.

According to the report, the death toll may reach about 35,000, some 145,000 people may be injured while around 175,000 buildings will be damaged.

Where exactly is the West Marikina Valley Fault Line? It lies northeast of Manila and traverses Marikina, Pasig going to Muntinlupa down to the south.

Instead of being afraid and all panicky, we should make sure we are ready should an earthquake happen. And for those who are located at fault line or near the said fault line make sure to leave the place as soon as possible, it is much better to avoid as early as possible than to wait for the disaster to happen.

Here are some earthquake safety tips to remember.

What to do – Before the Earthquake

·          Arrange your home for safety: Store heavy objects on lower shelves and store breakable objects in cabinets with latched doors. Don't hang heavy mirrors or pictures above where people frequently sit or sleep.

·          Store flammable liquids away from potential ignition sources.

·          Stock up on emergency supplies. These include: battery operated radio (and extra batteries), flashlights (and extra batteries), first aid kit, bottled water, two weeks food and medical supplies, blankets, cooking fuel, tools needed to turn off your gas, water and electric utilities.

·          Learn what to do during an earthquake (see During the Earthquake)

What to do – During the Earthquake

·          If outdoors, move to an open area where falling objects are unlikely to strike you.

·          If driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges and overpasses, or under power lines, trees and large signs.

·          If indoors, quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk, a strong table, or along an interior wall. The goal is to protect yourself from falling objects and be located near the structural strong points of the room.

What to do – After the Earthquake

·          Check for injuries and attend to people who may need help.

·          If the power is out, unplug appliances to prevent possible damage when the power is turned back on.

·          If you smell or hear a gas leak, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas at the meter.

·          If the building is badly damaged, evacuate immediately.

The only powerful thing we can do is to pray it won't happen.

Of these, the MARIKINA VALLEY FAULT poses the greatest danger because it custs through all the modern and progressive portions of Manila such as Eastwood, Rockwell, Ortigas Center, Bonifacio Global City, Ayala Center, and Alabang. Also, the PhiVolcs people have warned that this fault line can move anytime because it is already "11 years late" for its movement.

of the message. The Blessed Virgin appeared to three children in Fatima ,
Portugal , in 1917........ this is a proven fact;one of these children was
Lucia, (died 2-13-05).

She was a cloistered nun, and lived in a monastery in Portugal .
Lucia disclosed the message for the first time;  to Pope Pius Xll  who,
after reading , sealed it and stored it away without making it public.
Later Pope John XXIII read it and, in the same manner as his predecessor,
he kept it out of the public eye because he knew that once revealed;
it would bring desperation and panic to mankind,

will  fabricate mortal weapons that will destroy the world

religious orders...... .....
 
God will allow all natural phenomena like smoke, hail, cold,
water, fire, floods, earthquakes, winds and inclement weather to slowly
batter the planet.

Father Agustin, who lives in Fatima , said that Pope Paul VI
gave him permission to visit Sister Lucia, a cloistered nun (she did not
leave the monastery nor was allowed to receive any visitors). Father
Agustin said that she received him greatly overwhelmed and told him:
'Father, Our Lady is very sad because nobody is interested in her prophecy
of 1917,  though the righteous are walking through a narrow path, the
evil ones are walking through an ample road that is leading them straight
to their destruction! Believe me, Father, the punishment will come very
soon.  'Many souls will be  lost and many nations will disappear from the
earth.

But, in the middle of all these, if men reflect, pray and practice
sincerity, good deeds, kindness and respect, the world can be
saved....... . .. However, if men persist with evil ways....greed, hatred,
selfish acts, rivalry, and riff, the world will be lost forever!.
The time has come for all  to pass on the message of our Blessed Lady to
their families, friends, and to the entire world.
 
 

Continue praying, make penitence and sacrifices. We are close to the last
minute of the last day and the catastrophes are near. Due to this, many
that were far from the Church will return to the open arms of the Church of Jesus
Christ.

The joining of the churches will result in one Holy Catholic and
Apostolic Church; ........ England , Russia , China , Jews, Buddhists,
Muslims, Hindus, Protestants, etc..... All will return believing and
worshipping God our Creator, in his beloved Son and in Blessed Mother
Virgin Mary.'
 

                                 WHAT AWAITS US ???
Everywhere there will be 'Peace Talks', but punishment will come.
A MAN IN A VERY  IMPORTANT POSITION WILL BE ASSASSINATED AND THIS WILL
PROVOKE THE WAR.
A POWERFUL ARMY WILL DOMINATE ALL THROUGH EUROPE AND THE NUCLEAR WAR WILL
COMMENCE.

This war will destroy everything; darkness will fall over us for 72 hours
(3 days) and the one third of humanity that survives this obscurity and sacrifice, will
commence to live a new era; they will be good people.

On a very cold night, 10 minutes before midnight, A GREAT QUAKE will
shake the earth  for 8 hours. This will be the third signal that God Is,
who governs the earth.
The righteous and those who propagate the faith and the message of the
Lady of   Fatima is :
'ONE SHOULD NOT FEAR, DO NOT BE AFRAID'.

WHAT TO DO??? : Bow your heads, kneel down and ask God for
forgiveness.  Because, only what is good and is not under the power of
evil will survive the catastrophe.
In order for you to prepare and remain alive and safe, I will give you

ANGUISH..... ... AND IN A SHORT PERIOD THE EARTHQUAKE WILL COMMENCE.
THE EARTH WILL SHAKE.....

The  shake will be so violent that will move the earth
23 degrees and then it will return it to its normal position.
Then, total and absolute darkness will cover the entire planet....
All the evil spirits will be mingling around and free, doing harm to all
those souls that did not want to listen to this message and those who did
not want to repent.

To the faithful souls, remember to light the blessed candles,
prepare a sacred altar with a crucifix in order to communicate with GOD
and implore for His infinite mercy....
All will be dark; and IN THE SKY A GREAT MYSTIC CROSS
will appear to remind us the price that his beloved Son had to pay for

In the house the only thing that can give light will be the
HOLY CANDLES... Once lit, nothing will put them off until the three days
of darkness are over.  Also, you should have holy water that should be
sprinkled abundantly on windows and doors. The Lord will protect the
property of the chosen ones....
Kneel down before the powerful cross of my beloved Son, pray the Rosary
and after each Hail Mary you must pray the following:

'Oh God forgive us our sins, preserve us from the fires of hell, take all
souls to heaven, especially those who are in more need of thy mercy
Blessed Virgin Mary, protect us, we love you, save us and save the
world'.

Pray 5 Creeds and  the Rosary which is the secret to my
immaculate Heart. All those who believe in my words go and take the
message to everyone,

DO NOT FEAR!  FEAR NOTHING DURING THE LORD'S GREAT DAY.
Talk to all, now that there is time. Those who keep quiet will be
responsible for all those souls who will perish in ignorance.
All those who pray humbly the rosary will have the protection of heaven.
Those who are bound to die, I will help them die in peace, and they will
be holy when they enter the other world.

I wish all my children to attend mass every first Friday and every first
Saturday of each month; to confess and receive Holy Communion; and in
doing so, save the world from its TOTAL DESTRUCTION. ..!!

When the earth shakes no more, those who still do not believe in our Lord
will perish in a horrible way:-
The wind will bring gas and it will disperse it everywhere, then the sun
will rise.

and Bishops are now awaiting another message that speaks
about repentance and prayer. Please remember that God's words are not a
threat, .......... but good news.....

Department of Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona would like to inform the public that the Philippines is safe from radiation exposure resulting from the damage to Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

Ona took part in a briefing presided by President Benigno S. Aquino III held this noon to evaluate the possible consequences arising from the Fukushima nuclear plant incident and to consider necessary precautionary measures. Present during the said briefing were Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr., Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo, Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, Presidential Communications Development Office Secretary Ricky Carandang as well as officials of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) and the National Security Agency.

During the briefing, the PNRI gave assurance that, at present, the Philippines is not in the path of any plume that may have been released by the plant. There was no reported meltdown in the damaged nuclear power plant. As of 11am today the wind pattern in Japan indicates that the Philippines is unlikely to be hit by any radioactive fallout from Fukushima. The PNRI is in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Administration to be abreast of the aftermath of the Fukushima incident. The DOH and all government agencies are monitoring the situation on an hourly basis and have prepared contingency measures.

 

RADIATION ILLNESS

Exposure from ionizing radiation following nuclear plant accidents may cause acute as well as long-term effects on health.

Health effects are largely determined by the degree and duration of exposure. The highest risk to health is found among nuclear plant workers. Communities a few miles around the plant may also be affected. That is why evacuation maybe necessary to reduce this risk.

Very early occurrence of vomiting or very serious conditions or even death among exposed population, strongly suggest human absorption of very high doses of ionizing radiation. Blood tests may be done to confirm exposure. Geiger counter or dosimeter are also used to monitor progressive exposure to radiation. 

Acute illness is known as acute radiation syndrome or radiation poisoning. This manifests as nausea, vomiting, fever or diarrhea. More serious conditions appear with extreme exposure. A latent period follows and lasts for weeks or months. Then more serious conditions affecting other organs may occur. Hair may fall and blood may be found in stools or vomit.

It is important that proper decontamination is done among those exposed. This means removing all clothes and shoes followed by showering. Treatment is given to prevent organ damage. 

Long-term effects after exposure include cancers and genetic malformations in fetuses.

Presently, Japanese authorities are implementing containment procedures to eliminate radiation leaks. People have also been evacuated from a 12-mile radius. Hundreds have been screened for radiation exposure and so far no report of any illness was made.

How to Protect our Environment

Water is life. Let’s protect and conserve our forest and sources of our potable water. We must plant some more trees to make our environment healthier. Prevent the wastage of water and curbing pollution. Do not pollute our rivers by not dumping garbage. Of course, we should also avoid excessive usage of water.

In my previous blogs, I wrote about some tips of saving the environment. One of this is about using the paper bags instead of the plastic bags. Buy the products that we can reuse.

Activities like composting can be of great help in recycling of garbage into useful manures. Avoid an extensive use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic nutrients. Natural manures are a better option for farms and gardens. Go ORGANIC....

Look at the gadgets you use at home. Are all of them necessary? Do you maintain them well and use them efficiently? Replace the air filters for your air conditioning unit once a month. Turn off the ACs as also the lights and fans in unused rooms. Make sure to switch off the lights, the television or radio sets before you leave the house. Do not keep your computer switched on while you are not using it. Did you know that your refrigerator and water heaters consume a lot of power? A careful use of these gadgets is a good way to save electricity.

These are some of the simple ways in which we can contribute towards saving nature. A small step by each of us can make a huge leap towards saving the environment.

Electronic (Product ) Waste Disposal

Electronics waste should not just be thrown away like any other garbage due to their toxic components.

Sources (information sheets) revealed that television sets contain hazardous chemicals such as brominated flame retardants, cadmium, lead, mercury and several other chemicals, which can damage the nervous, gastro-intestinal an immune systems.

Smashing, burning of television screens would release toxins and glass shards detrimental to public health, especially to the environment.

To our nature loving citizens, if you have damaged electronic products or electronic waste bring them to government accredited-electronic recyclers, if any, or contact any environmental groups in your area. These wastes should be dismantled in controlled conditions that will minimize the toxic discharge into the environment.

Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona, during a news conference, advises the public to practice a healthy lifestyle by engaging in regular exercise, avoiding salty and fatty foods, not smoking, and limiting intake of alcoholic beverages as the Department of Health observes February as ‘Heart Month’. Ona stressed that diseases of the heart and the vascular system now ranks as the country’s top killer diseases. He also said that about 90% of Filipinos today are positive for one or more risk factors like physical inactivity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, obesity and diabetes.
